Paver screeds

The screed is the heart of each road paver. From an engineering perspective, it is the most crucial component, guaranteeing that the specified results are achieved on any paving job.

A screed has three main functions in the paver's operation:

1. Profiling the pavement - creating a geometrically correct profile of the roadway from the mass of hot asphalt mix;
2. pavement finishing - creating a uniform closed surface structure;
3. Precompaction - effected by own weight of screeds and energy of compacting units (tamping bar, vibrator and/or pressing plate).

Two types of screeds are distinguished according to their design:

• Non-slip paving plate - A monolithic paving plate with a fixed width. Increasing the paving width on rigid paving slabs is accomplished by installing hinged extensions on the base section. The mounted extensions are rigidly mounted on both sides of the screed by means of vertical and horizontal extender mounting elements. The vertical element fixes the hinged extension sections flush with the base section of the plate. The horizontal element is mounted on the back side of the screed and is required to prevent the extenders from sagging backward under the influence of the asphalt mixture layer. Since the basic width of the fixed screed (without extensions) does not always match the paving width requirements and because mounting of the extensions is more time-consuming, they are most often used for paving large areas over a longer period of time with uniform pave widths and large bend radii.
• Extending screeds - screeds with variable width. The paving screed width is changed by hydraulically extending screeds. This type of screed is used when paving sections with different working widths, as it enables the paving width to be increased and decreased quickly (from the control panel).
